BC Migration — Asahi Refining Canada
Project Overview
Asahi Refining Canada required a full migration from their legacy Microsoft Dynamics Navision on-premise system to Business Central Cloud. The engagement covered the complete implementation lifecycle — fit-gap analysis, legacy AL code refactoring, data migration planning and execution, stakeholder management, and post-go-live support for a Canadian precious metals refinery.
Migration Approach
- Phase 1 — Discovery & Fit-Gap: Documented all existing NAV customisations, mapped them to BC standard functionality, and identified gaps requiring custom AL development
- Phase 2 — AL Refactoring: Converted legacy C/AL (CAL) code to modern AL extensions compatible with Business Central Cloud
- Phase 3 — Data Migration: Designed and executed migration of master data (customers, vendors, items) and historical transactions to BC
- Phase 4 — Testing & UAT: Led user acceptance testing cycles, resolved issues, and signed off on functionality
- Phase 5 — Go-Live & Support: Managed cutover, validated opening balances, and provided hypercare post-go-live
My Role & Contributions
- Served as Business Central Lead Techno-Functional Consultant across the full engagement
- Managed the complete implementation lifecycle — analysis, fit-gap, design, migration planning, configuration, testing, deployment
- Conducted discovery sessions to analyse existing NAV processes and map them to BC functionality
- Performed detailed gap analysis between Navision and Business Central to identify all customisation and configuration requirements
- Refactored legacy NAV customisations into BC-compatible AL extensions
- Ran regular stakeholder meetings to communicate progress, risks, and adoption milestones
- Analysed new requirements, determined technical approach, and developed AL code accordingly
- Performed data cleansing, transformation, and validation prior to migration
- Led end-to-end migration from Navision to Business Central Cloud including full data migration, configuration, and delivery
- Created functional and technical documentation for all customisations and configurations
